Twelve Archetypes for Powerful Personal Development & Emotional Healing
Watch and listen to the video if you would like to hear the following blog spoken with images.
Archetypes are foundational stories that can help us make sense of our experience as human beings. They are believed to have developed over millions of years of collective evolution to become genetically embedded in the human psyche. The theory is that, in the same way that animals are born instinctively knowing how to be which ever species they are, the archetypes are instinctual, genetic elements in the human psyche that do not need to be learned, all that is needed is the right environmental conditions for them to become manifest.
It is generally agreed there are 12 main archetypes, each is usually depicted as a human character but archetypes are not complete people, they actually represent psychic or emotional energy that forms just a part of a whole person. Some archetypes have more masculine energy and some have more feminine energy but each archetypal energy applies equally to males and females. Integrating each of the 12 main archetypes into conscious awareness is thought to be central to emotional healing, wellbeing and self-development.
All 12 archetypes are present in everyone, some archetypes will be more developed, while others will be weaker and more suppressed. Those archetypal qualities that are weaker and suppressed will need developing in order to become a whole and balanced human being.
When all 12 archetypes are fully integrated into our conscious awareness, we will be whole, centred, balanced and calm. Each archetype has positive and negative attributes, and being able to identify both the positive and potential for the negative qualities in yourself is required for full integration, as this will enable you to release suppressed emotional content, expand your awareness and enrich your experience in life.
When the energies relating to one or more of the archetypes are suppressed, the trapped energy can make it difficult to achieve emotional wellbeing. Failure to integrate and express the positive aspects and failure to acknowledge ones capacity for the negative aspects of each archetype can lead to disharmony, disease, distress and loss of emotional wellbeing.
The 12 archetypal energies that are reviewed in the video are: The Ruler, The Healer, The Artist – these 3 archetypes represent energies associated with structure, stability and control. The Orphan, The Lover, The Clown – these 3 archetypes represent energies associated with making connections, socialising and belonging. The Dreamer, The Seeker, The Guide – these 3 archetypes represent energies associated with exploration, freedom and fulfilment. The Hero, The Rebel, The Magician these 3 archetypes represent energies associated with ego, risk-taking and mastery.
